We collaborated with
John Seals, Architect, on the rebuilding of this 5000 square
feet residence at the upper rim of the Oakland fire area. Originally
surrounded by tall redwoods, it was not until after the fire
that the property revealed it’s sweeping panoramic view
of the bay. The client wanted their original house reconstructed
as is, and the general plan was followed. The clerestory windows
were enlarged to increase interior daylight. The upper level
rooms were opened to the view, and the double height solarium,
which was originally a deck, has been enclosed in glass with
a red spiral staircase. This area now serves as a music room.
Sliding sandblasted glass doors reminiscent of shoji shutters,
which provide translucency and light, have been used throughout
the house. They now also provide views from the kitchen.
Beams are notched with a 1”x1” channel in each
of the beams which casts uplights over the entire expanse
of ceiling, providing a unique architectural lighting design
solution.
The careful detailing, shoji doors, and cedar paneling work
together to subtly evoke a Japanese spirit. Attention was
given to provide indirect lighting so as not to obstruct
the view.
